Tackling Oak Processionary Moth with Drone Technology

Oak Processionary Moth (OPM) continues to pose a growing threat across the UK—impacting both public health and the health of oak trees. Known for its harmful hairs that can cause skin irritation and respiratory issues, OPM requires careful, controlled treatment—especially in high-risk or hard-to-reach areas.

In June 2025, HighVantage partnered with Koppert and Network Rail to tackle OPM infestations across the Greater London area, using advanced drone technology to deliver a safer and more effective solution.

A Smarter Approach to a Hazardous Problem

The challenge was clear: affected oak trees were often tall, awkwardly positioned, and difficult to access using traditional methods such as ladders or elevated platforms. These approaches not only increase operational complexity but also expose workers to unnecessary risk.

HighVantage deployed its advanced spray drone to overcome these limitations.

Flying directly into the upper canopy, the drone applied a precisely controlled treatment of nematodes—a biological solution that targets OPM effectively without harming the surrounding environment.

Precision Application, Maximum Coverage

One of the key advantages of drone application is the natural downward airflow generated by the propellers. This airflow helps carry the treatment through the entire canopy, ensuring:

• Even distribution across leaves and branches
• Penetration into hard-to-reach areas
• Coverage from the top of the tree down to the base

This level of precision ensures the treatment reaches exactly where it’s needed—maximising effectiveness while minimising waste.
